5 Step Plan To Stay Safe At College
If you’re heading off to college as a freshman or going back for another year of fun and education with friends, it’s important to put your safety at the top of the list of things you must do heading into a new year of campus life.
Living on your own (whether in a dorm, Greek house or apartment) opens up a lot of awesome new freedoms; but it also exposes you to many more potentially dangerous situations. Let’s get educated and empowered to handle whatever comes your way with a few simple things you can do to protect yourself (and put mom’s mind at ease a little bit while you’re gone).
⭐Enroll in a free self-defense class.
Even if you have taken a self-defense class in the past, it’s always a smart idea to brush up on your skills and learn new ones. Taking a basic self-defense and safety awareness seminar is a great way to learn the fundamental techniques to defend yourself and escape to safety if you are ever attacked and most of them only take a few hours out of your busy schedule.
Free self-defense classes are offered through a lot of different organizations at various times of the year so do a little research and sign up for a class today. See if any of the following offer them in your area:
- Most local police departments offer some form of self-defense and safety awareness to communities several times a year. The program most often used by police is called R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) and it is an excellent self-defense class.
- Most college campuses offer them free to students. Contact Campus Security at your school to get more information and sign up.
- Apartment complexes and dorms may offer them to residents. If not, ask them to set one up for your community!
- Community centers, local churches and non-profit organizations are other places you may find offering free self-defense classes.
- If you can’t find a class offered by any of the above groups, you can contact a local martial arts studio and they may offer a class or be able to direct you to an organization that does.
⭐Do a background check on any new roommates that you’ll be sharing your living space with.
Just because they were accepted to attend the same school as you, does not always mean that they have the same moral and ethical standards. You can get a quality background check online for less than $30 and it will be money well spent if it provides you information that may alert you to any security and safety risks.
There are literally dozens of online background check companies and the quality of information varies greatly. Comprehensive services can provide you info as detailed as drug screening results. Do some research and read online reviews before selecting the background check service that fits your needs.

⭐Create a plan of action now for an active shooter crisis on your campus.
- Do you have some form of bulletproof protection to carry with you on campus at all times?
- What will you do when you hear shots fired?
- How will you contact your family?
- Where will you and your roommates meet up?
